Eastern Parkway Library begins $36 million renovation

A $36 million renovation and expansion project for the historic Eastern Parkway Library in Crown Heights has officially commenced. The project aims to increase the library's public space by more than 50 percent, with completion expected by summer 2028.

Serving the community since 1914, the Classical Revival building will undergo significant infrastructure upgrades, including improvements to lighting efficiency, plumbing, HVAC, and fire alarm systems. The renovation will focus on increasing accessibility through the installation of a new elevator and entrance ramp to ensure full ADA compliance.

New interior features will include dedicated zones for children and teens, a STEAM room, a community room, and a multipurpose room equipped with a projector. The design also incorporates a new glass façade to increase natural light, an outdoor courtyard, and a third-floor reading terrace. While preserving the building's historic architecture, the project will also feature artwork by New York-based artist Oasa DuVerney. During the construction period, residents can access a temporary pop-up library provided by the Settlement Housing Fund.
