Eastern Uusimaa reports significant rise in domestic violence
The Eastern Uusimaa Police Department has reported a significant increase in adult domestic violence compared to the previous year. In some units, the number of cases has doubled. While part of this rise is attributed to improved classification of reports and a greater focus on identifying non-physical violence since 2025, police state that the increase represents a real phenomenon that cannot be explained by statistical methods alone.
There has also been a rise in the number of temporary and technically monitored restraining orders during 2026. Criminal Inspector Krista Vallila noted that these orders are frequently sought in cases involving violations of existing orders, such as stalking or monitoring a protected person.
To address the situation, police are working to improve investigation processes and resource domestic violence investigations more effectively. Throughout 2026, all criminal investigators have received training on the specific characteristics of domestic violence, with field officers scheduled for training in the autumn.
