EasyJet ordered to compensate passengers for Olbia-Milan flight cancellation

The Justice of the Peace in Olbia has ordered EasyJet to pay compensation to two passengers following the cancellation of flight EJU6005 on August 8, 2024. The flight was scheduled to travel from Olbia to Milan Bergamo.

After the cancellation, the passengers were rebooked on a flight the following day, resulting in a total delay of approximately 13 hours and 46 minutes. Under European Regulation (EC) No 261/2004, airlines are required to provide financial compensation for cancellations unless they can prove extraordinary circumstances that were unavoidable. In this instance, the court found that the airline failed to provide such evidence.

Because the flight distance was under 1,500 kilometers, the judge awarded 250 euros to each passenger, totaling 500 euros. The ruling reaffirms that compensation is a fixed indemnity due to passengers once the legal requirements are met, regardless of whether specific concrete damages are demonstrated.
