eBay investigates illegal gender-test kit listings for India

eBay has launched an internal investigation into its shipping and checkout safeguards after discovering multiple listings for prenatal gender-prediction kits available for delivery to India.

Under Indian law established in 1994, prenatal sex determination is a criminal offense intended to prevent female foeticide. An investigation identified at least nine listings from third-party sellers, including brands such as SneakPeek and Peekaboo, with prices ranging from $6.99 to $156.59.

Following notification of these listings, eBay removed the products. The company stated that the listings violated both local regulations and internal policies, and it is currently reviewing its controls to determine if further enhancements to the international shipping experience are necessary.
