Eberhard Vogel, East German football legend, dies at 83

Eberhard Vogel, a legendary East German footballer, has died at the age of 83 following a long illness. A prominent figure for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and FC Carl Zeiss Jena, Vogel was a record-setting player in the DDR-Oberliga with 440 appearances.

During his career, Vogel earned 74 caps for the East German national team and participated in the 1974 World Cup. His achievements include two Olympic bronze medals (1964 and 1972), a DDR championship in 1967, and three FDGB Cup titles. He also reached the 1981 European Cup Winners' Cup final with Jena.

Beyond his playing days, Vogel had a successful career coaching youth teams, leading the East German junior selection to European Championship titles and a U20 World Cup third-place finish. He was highly regarded by peers, including former teammate and coach Hans Meyer, who described his play as “world-class.”
