Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak declared international health emergency
A new outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus has been declared a public health emergency of international concern. The epidemic is spreading across the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, with the primary focus in the Ituri province of the DRC.
Official health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo report that this rare strain has infected more than 1,960 people and resulted in over 700 deaths. The virus is transmitted through direct contact with the bodily fluids of infected or recently deceased individuals. The World Health Organization has issued an international alert due to the rapid spread of the strain and the challenges of accessing healthcare in affected regions.
In the city of Goma, the health crisis is compounding existing social and economic pressures. The local cultural scene, which serves as a vital social link for residents, has faced significant disruption due to the ongoing health threat and previous security instability in the North Kivu region.
