Ebola epidemic in DR Congo reaches record death toll
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing its deadliest Ebola epidemic on record. Recent government data confirms 4,945 cases and 2,325 deaths, surpassing the fatalities of the 2018-2020 outbreak.
This current crisis is driven by the Bundibugyo strain, for which there is currently no approved vaccine or specific treatment. The World Health Organization has warned that the virus is spreading at an exceptionally rapid pace. The outbreak is centered in the Ituri province, with cases also reported in six other provinces, while Uganda has confirmed 20 cases.
In response, the United Nations has released an additional $30.5 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to support the response. The World Food Programme is also expanding its hot meals program to treatment centers in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu to assist those in affected regions.
