Ebola virus cases confirmed in North Kivu, DRC

Health authorities in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, have confirmed the first cases of Ebola virus in the Manguredjipa and Biena health zones. These cases, located in the Bapere sector and Manzia grouping within the Lubero territory, were identified as contacts of cases originating from Butembo.

Local medical teams are currently working on decontamination and contact tracing. However, officials have expressed significant concern regarding the region's isolation and lack of road infrastructure, which may hinder the ability to monitor contacts effectively. The area is already facing challenges due to insecurity linked to ADF rebel activity.

This development is part of the 17th Ebola outbreak involving the Bundibugyo strain. Currently, five of the seven health zones in the Lubero territory have been affected. Local administrators have previously noted a lack of logistical resources necessary to support the medical response efforts.
