Ebro Hydrographic Confederation rejects ecological flow optimization

The Ebro Hydrographic Confederation (CHE) has rejected a proposal to ‘optimize’ the ecological flow at the mouth of the Ebro River. This proposal had been requested by the Taula de Consens pel Delta and other entities, including PDE and GEPEC.

During the Water Council of the Ebro Hydrographic Basin held in Zaragoza, the CHE stated that the ‘necessary support’ to protect the ecological flow from gaps and shallows had not been obtained. Additionally, studies will be conducted to review the ecological flow of the Montsant River at the Margalef dam.

The Scheme of Important Issues (ETI) report, which precedes the draft hydrological plan, was presented following the processing of 166 allegations. The document also notes sectoral concerns regarding the economic impact of new European directives on human water consumption, purification, and supply water protection perimeters. Furthermore, internal regulation conditions for irrigation areas with an annual allocation of up to 2,000 m3/ha will be reduced by 50%.

A public consultation on the draft Hydrological Plan Project for the Ebro Hydrographic Basin is expected to begin on November 27.
