EBU releases guidelines to curb sexualised camera shots in women's athletics

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), together with European Athletics, has published a 23‑page booklet titled “Raising the Bar” that sets out new broadcast guidelines for women’s track‑and‑field events. Broadcasters are advised to avoid low‑angle, rear‑view, overly close or lingering shots and unnecessary slow‑motion replays that could sexualise athletes, and to focus instead on technique, performance and emotion. The document cites specific recommendations for disciplines such as pole vault, high jump, long jump and sprint races, urging front‑or‑side camera positions and wider framing, especially at the start line and when athletes are fatigued.

Olympic competitors Holly Bradshaw, Ivana Španović and Blanka Vlašić helped shape the guidelines, and EBU Sport executive director Glen Killane stressed that the aim is to “respect the dignity of athletes and improve storytelling”. While the guidance is not yet enforceable, it is intended for public‑service broadcasters across Europe and is expected to influence how women’s athletics are presented on television.

The initiative seeks to reduce voyeuristic coverage, protect athletes from online abuse linked to such imagery, and promote a more equitable portrayal of women’s sports.
