Eurovision 2027: RTVE granted extension to decide on participation
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has granted Spain's RTVE and Slovenia's RTVSLO until December to confirm their participation in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest. The extension is intended to address the complexity of the decision-making process regarding the contest's composition.
In Spain, the decision rests with the RTVE Board of Directors. The broadcaster previously opted not to participate in the 2026 edition following the EBU's decision to include Israel's KAN. RTVE leadership has indicated a preference to maintain the suspension of participation, citing concerns over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the perceived neutrality of the competition.
The 2027 contest is scheduled to take place from May 11 to May 15 in Burgas, Bulgaria. The EBU has confirmed 36 participating broadcasters so far, representing approximately 600 million people. Notable updates include the debut of CBC/Radio-Canada and the return of North Macedonia's MRT.
