EC VSV faces financial collapse ahead of hockey season

The Austrian ice hockey club EC VSV is facing a severe financial crisis just days before the start of the new season. The club's managing director, Martin Winkler, has resigned, leaving a vacancy that prevents the organization from paying outstanding bills. Reports suggest the club lacks the funds to even secure away jerseys from its supplier.

Estimates indicate a shortfall of 500,000 to 700,000 euros for current operations, in addition to potential million-euro claims from the tax office, health insurance, and pandemic aid repayments. Without a managing director to authorize payments, the club risks withdrawing from the league before the season begins.

A critical crisis meeting is scheduled at the office of Villach Mayor Günther Albel. The meeting is expected to include VSV legend Giuseppe Mion and ICE Hockey League Vice President Erich Falkensteiner. There are also reports that prominent industrialist Hans Peter Haselsteiner may attend to assist in efforts to save the upcoming season.
