EC VSV wins season opener amid Austrian hockey financial concerns

EC VSV secured a 2-1 victory against Pioneers Vorarlberg in their season opener for the win2day ICE Hockey League. Elias Wallenta scored the opening goal in the first period, followed by a shorthanded goal from Joël Teasdale. Despite a late attempt by the home team to close the gap, the Villach-based team maintained their lead to claim three points.

Separately, the financial health of the Austrian ICE Hockey League clubs remains a concern. Financial reports for the 2024/25 fiscal year show that five of the eight clubs are operating at a loss. Notable deficits include EC VSV with a loss of 1.34 million euros and Steinbach Black Wings Linz with 2.17 million euros. In contrast, the league's marketer, Profs Marketing GmbH, reported a profit of approximately 914,000 euros.

To ensure the current season proceeds, immediate measures have been implemented, including a solidarity contribution from other clubs to cover projected shortfalls of 500,000 to 600,000 euros.
