ECA Digital: One year of Brazil's digital safety law for minors
One year after its enactment, the Digital Statute of Children and Adolescents (ECA Digital) in Brazil is beginning to reshape how digital platforms operate. The law introduces several safety measures, including the prohibition of infinite scroll feeds for younger users and the suspension of certain chat functions for minors to mitigate online risks.
Platforms with more than one million users under the age of 18 are now required to publish transparency reports every six months detailing their compliance with these regulations. While experts from organizations like Instituto Alana note that digital products must be adjusted to protect minors, implementation remains a challenge.
Thiago Tavares, president of Safernet Brasil, highlighted that many companies continue to ignore the existence of the ECA Digital, suggesting that significant hurdles remain in the enforcement and full implementation of the law in the coming years.
