Ecatepec bans ‘toritos’ pyrotechnics for Independence Day

The municipal government of Ecatepec has implemented a permanent ban on the use of ‘toritos’ pyrotechnics during Independence Day celebrations to prevent accidents. This decision follows a recent tragedy in Temascalcingo, where a pyrotechnic explosion resulted in 11 deaths and over 80 injuries.

As part of the ‘Fiestas Patrias en Paz 2026’ operation, Mayor Azucena Cisneros Coss announced a security deployment involving more than 1,800 municipal police officers and 113 Navy elements. The operation includes alcohol checkpoints, the enforcement of ‘Ley Seca’ (dry law), and strict supervision of fireworks by Civil Protection and Firefighters.

While certain fireworks such as ‘castillos’ may be permitted, organizers must obtain a ‘constancia de no inconveniencia’ (certificate of no inconvenience) after a thorough review of the materials and safety conditions. Authorities warned that the storage of gunpowder in closed spaces or irregular locations is strictly prohibited; any unauthorized materials detected will be seized and destroyed.
