Ecatepec establishes mental health unit for police officers
The municipal government of Ecatepec has established the Unidad de Acompañamiento y Bienestar Integral to provide psychological support to local police officers. The initiative, part of the General Directorate of Citizen Security and Municipal Transit, aims to address the mental health challenges caused by constant exposure to high-stress situations, including violent crimes, serious accidents, and traumatic events.
Officials noted that untreated anxiety, depression, and occupational stress can lead to behavioral changes, frequent absences, and increased suicide risks. This measure follows data from the Proyecto Azul Cobalto, which recorded 138 suicides among municipal, state, and federal police officers in Mexico between 2012 and 2026. The program seeks to dignify police work by creating a space where officers can discuss mental health issues without stigma.
