Ecatepec recognized as international Bird City
Ecatepec has been designated as a ‘Bird City’ by Environment for the Americas (EFTA) and the American Bird Conservancy (ABC), making it the first hyper-dense metropolitan area in Mexico to receive this international distinction. The municipality joins Cozumel and Los Cabos as part of the Bird City Network.
This recognition follows efforts by the Urban Bird Program (PAU), local environmental groups, and the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEMéx) to document and protect local wildlife. Despite high urban density and a population of approximately 1.64 million, the region has documented around 270 species of resident and migratory birds. Key habitats providing refuge include the Sierra de Guadalupe, the Ehécatl ravine, and the El Caracol wetland.
Susan Bonfield of EFTA noted that the distinction highlights how large cities can contribute to avian protection despite the pressures of urban growth and pollution. The designation serves as a commitment to the ongoing observation, environmental education, and habitat restoration within the urban environment.
