ECB considers funding West Indies women's Test match
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is considering the unusual step of providing direct financial support for an upcoming women’s Test match in the West Indies scheduled for spring 2027. The match is a critical red-ball warm-up for the England women's team ahead of their Ashes series against Australia.
This potential intervention follows recent financial difficulties announced by Cricket West Indies (CWI), which include sweeping cost-cutting measures and reductions to player contracts. Logistical challenges are exacerbated by high travel costs within the region; CWI reported spending over $80 million on domestic air travel between islands over the last 15 years.
ECB chair Richard Thompson stated that while he hopes the match proceeds as planned and does not expect a cancellation, the board would ‘look at’ absorbing logistical costs if necessary. Thompson emphasized the importance of the fixture for England’s preparations and expressed sympathy for the unique challenges facing West Indian cricket, suggesting that solutions could potentially involve the International Cricket Council.
