Eurogroup President Pierrakakis calls for European banking integration

During a series of meetings in Berlin, Eurogroup President and Greek Finance Minister Kyriakos Pierrakakis advocated for deeper European economic integration. He emphasized the urgent need for a Capital Markets Union, a Banking Union, and a Savings and Investment Union to enhance the continent's competitiveness against global powers like the US and China.

Pierrakakis warned that the current fragmentation of the European banking market constitutes a strategic vulnerability. He proposed removing national barriers to capital movement and simplifying regulations to allow European banks to achieve greater scale. He also highlighted the Greek experience, noting that structural reforms, while initially painful, have led to significant debt reduction and economic stability.

Separately, discussions regarding monetary policy highlighted potential future interest rate hikes. ECB Governing Council member Peter Kazimir stated that the central bank will not hesitate to raise rates if economic data necessitates action, particularly as energy costs and inflation remain concerns. Meanwhile, ECB Supervisory Board head Claudia Buch cautioned against relaxing banking regulations for short-term gains, stressing the importance of long-term financial stability.
