ECB launches public vote on new euro banknote designs featuring European culture and nature
The European Central Bank (ECB) unveiled ten final proposals for the next series of euro banknotes, the first complete redesign since the currency’s introduction in 2002. The designs are divided into two themes: “European culture”, which shows portraits of historic figures such as Ludwig van Beethoven, Marie Curie, Leonardo da Vinci, Maria Callas, Miguel de Cervantes and Bertha von Suttner; and “Rivers & Birds”, which highlights European rivers, bird species and key EU institutions on the reverse side. An online consultation allowing citizens across the euro area to vote on the preferred design runs until 21 September 2026, after which the ECB Governing Council will decide on the winning set, likely by the end of the year. The new notes will gradually enter circulation in the following years while existing banknotes remain legal tender. In addition to the aesthetic overhaul, the redesign incorporates enhanced anti‑counterfeiting features and accessibility improvements for visually impaired users. ECB President Christine Lagarde emphasised that euro banknotes are “one of the most tangible expressions of Europe” and that the new designs aim to reinforce a shared European identity.
