ECB President Lagarde rejects French presidential candidacy, stresses Europe’s role

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde told Euronews she is not a candidate for any political office, but she is closely watching the French presidential race scheduled for 2027. She emphasised that protecting Europe is essential and that the EU provides the framework in which member states, including France, can play a significant role. Lagarde said she hopes reason will prevail in the election and that the democratic process will continue, noting that “in politics eight months feel like an eternity.” She referenced the possible runoff between far‑right candidate Marine Le Pen and far‑left Jean‑Luc Mélenchon, adding that the outcome should not threaten France’s place in Europe. Lagarde also hinted she could consider leaving the ECB before her term ends in October 2027 if circumstances required, but reaffirmed her commitment to a strong European voice.

The president reiterated that Europe is “the only arena where states can have a relevant role,” and she will continue to support pro‑European values from whatever position she occupies.
