ECB rate drop lowers dollar cost of Portugal and UAE investor‑residency programs

The European Central Bank’s reference rate fell from $1.1721 per euro on 2 January to $1.1418 on 21 July, a 2.6 % decline. Using the same euro thresholds, the dollar equivalent of investor‑residency routes therefore fell. A €500,000 investment, for example, dropped from about $586,050 to $570,900, a $15,150 reduction. Larger thresholds saw bigger gaps: €250,000 fell by $7,575, €800,000 by $24,240 and €2 million by $60,600.

The analysis, performed by Movingto, applies the ECB rate to Portugal’s Golden Visa fund route and to show the impact. Portugal no longer accepts new property purchases for its Golden Visa, but the €500,000 fund route remains, with at least 60 % of the fund’s investments required to be in Portuguese companies. The United Arab Emirates estimate uses the midpoint of its central bank’s dirham‑to‑dollar rates. The calculations exclude fees, spreads or taxes and assume statutory thresholds have not changed.
