US tech hyperscalers increase euro debt to fund AI expansion

US tech hyperscalers, including Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, and Oracle, are significantly increasing their presence in the eurozone bond market to finance the massive capital expenditures required for artificial intelligence infrastructure. These euro-denominated debt issuances, often referred to as 'reverse Yankees', nearly doubled between 2025 and 2026.

The European Central Bank (ECB) has issued warnings regarding this trend. Analysts suggest that as these tech giants accumulate debt and capture a larger share of the bond market, they could drive up borrowing costs for all other economic sectors. There is also a concern that this accumulation could spill over into sovereign and supranational bond markets.

Currently, there is approximately €40 billion in outstanding euro-denominated debt from these hyperscalers. This surge in borrowing comes as projections suggest these companies may require over $1 trillion in capital expenditures by 2028 to support the global AI boom.
