Eching municipality ends subsidies for town hall art exhibitions

The municipality of Eching has announced it will no longer subsidize art exhibitions held in the town hall foyer. Previously, the non-profit association KulturForum Eching organized rotating exhibitions for local artists free of charge, a program that has hosted 16 artists over the last three years.

Under the new policy, the KulturForum will be charged 200 euros per exhibition for the use of the foyer, in addition to costs for municipal staff to assist with setup and dismantling. Furthermore, the association will no longer be covered by the town hall’s insurance and must secure its own coverage. Sybille Schmidtchen, chair of the KulturForum, stated that these new expenses would consume approximately two-thirds of the association’s membership fees, potentially limiting future activities.

Schmidtchen argued that the exhibitions provided cultural value to the town hall and benefited the community by making art accessible to citizens during routine administrative visits. Mayor Michael Steigerwald defended the decision, stating that the fees are intended to ensure equal treatment for all associations using municipal buildings.
