Echolocation: How Animals and Some Humans Use Sound to Navigate

Echolocation is a biological sonar system in which organisms emit sounds that bounce off nearby objects and interpret the returning echoes to gauge distance, size, shape and movement. The most well‑known practitioners are bats, which produce ultrasonic pulses to hunt insects and avoid collisions, and toothed whales such as dolphins, orcas and sperm whales, which emit rapid high‑frequency clicks to locate fish and navigate turbid waters. Certain bird species, including guacharos and some swifts, also use clicks to move through dark caves.

A minority of visually impaired humans have been trained to produce tongue clicks and listen to the echoes, creating an auditory map of their surroundings. Research shows that with practice the human brain can process these signals surprisingly well. The underlying principle of echolocation has been adopted in technology, most notably in sonar systems employed by ships and submarines for navigation and detection.
