ECLAC urges Latin America to diversify alliances amid global competition
The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) has urged the region to diversify its international alliances to navigate increasing competition between the United States, China, and the European Union. In a report titled ‘Ruptures and opportunities: proposals for Latin America and the Caribbean to prosper in the new geopolitical era,’ presented at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), experts emphasized the need to avoid rigid alignments.
Leonardo Lomelí, rector of UNAM and a commission member, stated that the region must expand its options and strengthen its geopolitical analysis and action capabilities. He noted that major powers are actively implementing strategies to secure access to Latin American resources, influence digital and physical infrastructure, and anchor supply chains to their own industrial policies.
Michelle Bachelet, co-president of the commission, highlighted that the shifting international landscape has increased the value of Latin American assets, including natural resources, human and financial productive capacities, and the size of the regional market.
