Eco-Friendly Gardens: Herb Lawns and Wildflower Meadows Gain Popularity

Garden experts are encouraging homeowners to replace traditional manicured lawns with more diverse plantings that support biodiversity. Katja Batakovic of "Natur im Garten" explains that a herb lawn "remains lower, is mowed more often and can be walked on," while a wildflower meadow offers height, structure and refuge for insects, birds and small mammals. The meadow requires less frequent mowing—typically two to three times a year—compared with a herb lawn’s two‑to‑four‑week schedule.

In parallel, a step‑by‑step guide for establishing a new lawn highlights the choice between rolled sod and seed, optimal sowing periods in May and September, and the importance of soil preparation, appropriate seed mixes and starter fertiliser. Both approaches stress reducing chemical inputs and enhancing ecological value in private gardens.
