Eco Fund allocates 151,904 euros for stone terrace restoration in Montenegro
The Eco Fund and Montenegro’s Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Northern Development have signed contracts to fund the restoration of traditional stone terraces, known as ‘suvozidi’. The initiative, supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the GEF 7 project, has allocated a total of 151,904 euros for the program.
The project involves 24 end-users, including agricultural producers and rural households, who will receive 100% financial support with no personal contribution required. Contracts were signed with four applicants: the Dr. Martin Schneider – Jacoby Association, PROES, Parkovi Dinarida, and the Ecological Society of Boka Kotorska.
A total of 1,285 square meters of terraces are planned for restoration using traditional materials and construction methods to preserve their original characteristics. Beyond physical repairs, the program includes training on biodiversity and practical workshops on traditional building techniques to ensure users can independently maintain these structures in the future. The restoration aims to prevent soil erosion, protect against landslides, and preserve local biodiversity.
