Ecobici expands in Mexico City to meet high demand

Mexico City is significantly expanding its Ecobici bike-sharing system to meet high demand and improve urban mobility. The system currently records approximately 8.3 trips per bicycle daily, a rate that exceeds major global networks such as Paris’s Vélib’, Montreal’s BIXI, and New York City’s Citi Bike.

To address high utilization and service strain, the city will increase the number of bicycles from 9,308 to 15,000 and expand the number of stations from 682 to 1,111. This expansion will extend the service to three new boroughs: Iztapalapa, Iztacalco, and Tlalpan. The project is being managed through a 10-year contract with 5M2, with a maximum operating cost of 2.434 billion pesos.

The rollout will occur over a nine-month period, with the first 1,500 new bicycles scheduled for official presentation on September 22. Additionally, the new contract mandates the installation of satellite trackers on all 15,000 bicycles to improve fleet management.
