Ecobici expands in Mexico City as Cuauhtémoc removes scooters

Mexico City is undergoing significant changes to its urban mobility landscape. The Ecobici bike-sharing system is set for a major expansion following an international tender awarded to the company 5M2. This second stage of expansion will add 7,500 new bicycles and 424 cycle stations, extending service to the Iztapalapa, Iztacalco, and Tlalpan boroughs. The contract for operating and maintaining the system is valid for 10 years, lasting until July 2036. Lyft will continue to provide the bicycles and operational software.

Simultaneously, authorities in the Cuauhtémoc borough have launched operations to remove electric scooters from public spaces. Mayor Alessandra Rojo de la Vega led the removal of vehicles in the Roma and Hipódromo neighborhoods following numerous complaints from residents regarding the obstruction of sidewalks and pedestrian paths. The mayor noted that the companies involved had not presented the necessary local permits or consulted the borough administration, despite claims that the deployment was related to international sporting events. The local government intends to seek dialogue with these companies to establish regulations that ensure pedestrian safety and order.
