Ecobici to expand in Mexico City with 15,000 GPS-equipped bicycles

Mexico City is expanding and renewing its Ecobici public bicycle system, increasing the fleet from 9,000 to 15,000 units. A key feature of the new contract is the integration of satellite GPS technology in all 15,000 bicycles to prevent theft and improve tracking. Currently, only one in ten bicycles is equipped with a locator.

The expansion will extend the service to the boroughs of Iztapalapa, Iztacalco, and Tlalpan, bringing the total coverage to nine boroughs. The infrastructure will also grow from 687 to 1,111 stations, supported by 424 new bike stations and a new maintenance center in the southern zone.

Mobility Secretary Héctor Ulises García noted that 17% of the current fleet is out of service due to theft or accidents. The new units will feature improved technical specifications, including aluminum components and stainless steel spokes. Additionally, the system will use heat maps to analyze travel patterns and optimize infrastructure placement based on demand.
