Ecomuseu do Corvo preserves traditional island craft

The Ecomuseu do Corvo in the Azores is working to preserve the ‘barreta’, a traditional wool cap unique to Corvo Island. Since 2022, the museum has hosted a weekly free workshop called ‘Hora da Barreta’ every Wednesday afternoon.

The craft originated in the 19th century among male whalers, influenced by Scottish fishermen, before the knowledge was passed down to women. The museum director, Deolinda Estêvão, noted that the workshop attracts both men and women, including students and international participants.

The specific technique was shared with the museum by local resident Rosa Mariana, whose mother is credited with maintaining the tradition. To ensure the craft survives for future generations, museum collaborator Patrícia Pacheco now assists in teaching the skill to interested participants.
