Economic authorities meet in Istanbul to discuss inflation and global risks

Economic authorities and central bank governors are meeting in Istanbul to discuss global inflation, growth, and debt risks. Christopher Waller of the U.S. Federal Reserve indicated that further interest rate increases may be necessary to reach the 2% inflation target, depending on economic data. Such moves could influence capital flows toward Mexico, affecting the peso and external financing costs.

In Mexico, the central bank maintained its reference rate at 6.50% following a September meeting, as annual inflation stood at 3.45%. While Mexico faces significant fiscal challenges and rising public debt, its inflation and interest rates remain considerably lower than those in Turkey, where inflation is near 30% and the central bank rate is 37%.

Beyond monetary policy, a comparison of infrastructure reveals a contrast between the two nations. Istanbul's airport and modern highway systems demonstrate high-scale construction capacity, handling 84.4 million passengers in 2025. In contrast, Mexico's primary airports, AICM and AIFA, face challenges regarding passenger volume, urban congestion, and connectivity.
