Economic challenges rise in South Africa and the United Kingdom

South Africa is facing a severe youth unemployment crisis, with rates climbing to nearly 63% in the second quarter of 2026. According to Statistics South Africa, the overall unemployment rate also rose to 33.6%, affecting approximately 8.5 million people. Economists note a significant correlation between education levels and employment, with unemployment among university graduates at roughly 12%, compared to 39% for those without a matric certificate. Experts suggest a persistent skills deficit remains a primary driver of the crisis.

In the United Kingdom, research indicates that startup survival rates are lagging behind international competitors. Only 38% of UK companies remain active five years after incorporation, compared to 51% in the US and 46% in the EU. This decline is attributed to structural challenges and a reduction in domestic venture capital funding, which fell from 33% in 2015 to 25% in 2025. Analysts argue that increased domestic investment is necessary to support entrepreneurship and spread economic prosperity beyond London.
