Economic concerns rise over French debt and AI productivity

Economic forecasts indicate a divergence between the artificial intelligence boom and broader productivity trends. While AI investments are currently driving profitability for many traded companies, Commerzbank suggests that a supply-side economic boom fueled by AI has not yet materialized. Recent data shows that while labor productivity has accelerated, total factor productivity (TFP) has stagnated or ceased to grow when adjusted for economic cycles.

In Europe, France is facing significant fiscal pressure as investors demand higher yields on government bonds. The spread between French 10-year bonds and German Bunds has reached levels reminiscent of the European debt crisis. France's public debt is approximately 119% of GDP, with a budget deficit expected to reach 5.4% of GDP.

Proposed fiscal consolidation efforts totaling 54 billion euros may only reduce the deficit to 5% of GDP due to rising debt servicing costs and automatic expenditure increases. Analysts estimate that French interest payments could rise from 2% of GDP in 2025 to 4% of GDP by the mid-2030s, potentially impacting funding for infrastructure, defense, and social programs.
