Vertical Corridor expands to North Macedonia and Serbia

Vertical Corridor natural gas energy security interconnector Western Balkans

North Macedonia and Serbia have officially joined the Vertical Corridor initiative, expanding the regional natural gas transmission network into the Western Balkans. The expansion was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed in Thessaloniki during the 10th Southeast Europe Energy Forum (SEEF).

With the inclusion of NOMAGAS from North Macedonia and Transportgas Serbia, the Vertical Corridor now connects nine countries: Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine, Moldova, North Macedonia, and Serbia. This initiative aims to enhance regional energy security, diversify supply routes, and optimize the use of existing infrastructure to facilitate bidirectional gas flows between Southern and Central/Eastern Europe.

Key infrastructure projects supporting this integration include a gas interconnector between Greece and North Macedonia, which is expected to be operational by 2027 with an initial capacity of approximately 1.4 billion cubic meters per year. Additionally, North Macedonia is advancing a 23-kilometer interconnector with Serbia to further strengthen its role as a regional transit hub.
