Argentina and Colombia face economic shifts as confidence and rates fluctuate

In Argentina, economic and political indicators show significant strain. The Government Confidence Index (ICG) fell 5.9% in September to 1.94 points, marking a 21.5% decline since the start of the year. This drop coincides with reports of a 2.9% contraction in economic activity in July and a rise in poverty affecting over 15 million people. While the economy has grown 5.6% since November 2023, the UBA Centro RA reports a loss of 329,667 registered salaried jobs during this period. Household consumption also declined, with the CAC Consumption Indicator falling 1.1% year-on-year in August, driven largely by an 11.4% drop in the transport and vehicles sector.

In Colombia, the Banco de la República raised the monetary policy interest rate by 25 basis points to 12.25% following an increase in annual inflation, which reached 6.2% in August. The central bank noted that food and regulated services are primary drivers of price pressures.
