Mexico presents 2027 Economic Package with focus on digital payments

Mexico's Secretary of Finance, Édgar Amador, has presented the 2027 Economic Package to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. The proposal projects real GDP growth between 1.5% and 2.5% and estimates a public sector deficit of 3.9% of GDP.

President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that the budget does not include new taxes or fuel price increases. Instead, the government aims to increase tax revenue to a historic high of 15.9% of GDP by strengthening the Tax Administration Service (SAT) and combating tax evasion, particularly through measures targeting fraudulent invoicing.

The package includes significant budget increases for key sectors: 20.6% for agriculture, 13% for science, 11.5% for security, 11.3% for health, and 10.7% for education. It also guarantees funding for social welfare programs and government worker salaries above inflation.

A central component of the proposal is the Digital Economy Law, which seeks to encourage digital payments and gradually reduce the use of cash. This initiative includes using the Digital CURP (with biometric data) for opening bank accounts and accessing financial services. While the government promotes this as modernization, some legislators have expressed concerns regarding privacy and economic freedom.
