Economic perspectives on Argentina: reserves and tourism

Economist Domingo Cavallo has emphasized the necessity for the Central Bank of Argentina to accumulate significant foreign exchange reserves to mitigate external risks. He identified potential fiscal and financial crises in the United States and Europe, along with a possible depreciation of the Brazilian Real and Chinese export aggression, as primary external threats to the Argentine industrial sector.

Cavallo argues that current monetary and exchange rate management may hinder reserve accumulation and maintain high country risk and interest rates. He suggests the Central Bank should accumulate reserves at a pre-announced daily rate and utilize monetary emission for financing rather than internal debt, while the Treasury should use fiscal resources to purchase dollars for foreign payments.

Separately, industry analysis highlights tourism as a vital economic driver for Argentina. In 2024, tourism ranked as the sixth largest national export complex, surpassing sectors such as meat, wheat, and gold. In 2022, direct tourism represented 1.7% of the GDP, while related industries contributed to a total of 4.4% of the GDP and supported 1.2 million jobs.
