Economic pressures mount as unions and councils critique national budgets

Labor unions and consumer watchdog groups are expressing concern over rising living costs and the inadequacy of proposed government budgets to protect household welfare.

In Botswana, the Botswana Public Employees Union (BOPEU) has criticized the government's focus on fiscal discipline, arguing that expenditure control should not come at the expense of workers' purchasing power. The union is calling for a shift in budget priorities for the 2027/28 National Budget to address the rising costs of food, housing, transport, electricity, education, and healthcare. BOPEU maintains that budget success should be measured by tangible impacts on employment and household welfare rather than just fiscal metrics.

In Jersey, the Consumer Council has warned that the proposed 2027–2030 Budget may fail to ease the burden on lower- and middle-income families. While acknowledging certain reliefs, such as an increased personal income tax threshold and higher child allowances, the Council expressed concern that these gains could be offset by increased duties on alcohol, tobacco, and vehicle emissions. The watchdog has called for an independent review to determine how the tax burden is shared and to ensure that working households are not disproportionately pressured by rising charges.
