Argentina economy sees surge in dollar demand and banking deposits
Argentina is experiencing significant shifts in its foreign exchange market. In July, the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) reported that individuals purchased USD 3,319 million in banknotes, marking the highest level in nine months and a 35.8% increase from June.
Recent market data shows the wholesale dollar has risen above $1,500, while the blue dollar has fluctuated around $1,535 to $1,555. The market has also seen intense activity in dollar futures, with trading volumes reaching a 15-month high due to official interventions and upcoming bond maturities.
Furthermore, there is a notable trend in banking savings; dollar deposits in Argentine banks grew ten times faster than peso deposits between December 2023 and August 2026. This surge in dollarization reflects a persistent preference for the US currency among local savers.
