Economic systems face scrutiny over capitalism and neoliberalism
Discussions regarding the stability and efficacy of modern economic systems suggest that both socialism and capitalism face significant challenges. While socialism is viewed as having failed long ago, capitalism is currently facing scrutiny due to an eroding middle class, reduced social mobility, and the realization that wealth creation has often come at the expense of future generations and poorer nations through climate change and globalization.
A distinction is being made between traditional capitalism and neoliberalism, the latter of which has dominated much of the Western world, including the UK and US, since the 1980s. Under the influence of leaders like Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan, neoliberalism promoted privatization, deregulation, and financialization. This shift has been linked to increased inequality, soaring house prices, and failing public services, as the economy has moved toward making money from money rather than producing essential goods and infrastructure.
