Economists warn of economic risks if AfD takes power in Germany
Leading German economists and labor leaders are warning of severe economic consequences if the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party gains power. Michael Hüther, Director of the Institute of the German Economy (IW), stated that the AfD's economic policies are unserious and could prolong the current crisis for decades. He specifically warned that an EU exit, or 'Dexit', would be economically disastrous, potentially causing 690 billion euros in damage and endangering 2.5 million jobs within five years.
Marcel Fratzscher, President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), echoed these concerns, describing a 'Dexit' as the end of the German economic model. He characterized the AfD's platform as contradictory, noting that promises of higher pensions and lower taxes alongside reduced immigration are financially incompatible.
Separately, Yasmin Fahimi, head of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), criticized the current federal government's direction and warned that an AfD government would ruin the country. The DGB has scheduled protests in 15 major cities on September 26 to express dissatisfaction with government policies regarding labor, pensions, and social services.
