EcoPro BM to invest 40 billion won in Hungary factory retrofit
EcoPro BM is investing approximately 40 billion won to retrofit its production lines at its facility in Debrecen, Hungary. The project aims to convert existing NCA (nickel, cobalt, aluminum) production lines into hybrid lines capable of producing both NCA and NCM (nickel, cobalt, manganese) cathode materials.
This strategic move is designed to meet the demand of premium German electric vehicle manufacturers for high-nickel NCM cathode materials, which contain over 90% nickel. The company expects to begin supplying these materials to European premium EV makers starting in the fourth quarter of next year.
The Debrecen plant has a total annual capacity of 54,000 tons across three lines, enough to supply approximately 600,000 electric vehicles. EcoPro BM plans to increase production at the site to 30,000 tons next year. To ensure cost competitiveness and supply stability, the company will link its Hungarian operations with a nickel supply chain from the BNSI refinery currently being constructed in Indonesia.
Additionally, the EcoPro Group has established a localized ecosystem in Debrecen, including EcoPro Innovation for lithium hydroxide production and EcoPro AP for industrial gases. The company anticipates that the Hungarian subsidiary will achieve profitability in the fourth quarter of this year through increased production and improved operational efficiency.
