Ecosia launches new web browser for Linux users

Berlin-based search engine Ecosia has launched a new web browser specifically for Linux users. The browser is available via the Ubuntu App Center, snapcraft.io, and direct download from the company's website.

The move follows a shift in desktop market shares within the EU, where Linux usage reportedly increased from 2.5% to 5.7% between 2024 and 2025, while Windows usage declined from 80.2% to 74.2%. Ecosia CEO Christian Kroll stated that Linux users are “pioneers of digital sovereignty and sustainability” and that the browser aligns with their values regarding privacy and climate.

While the browser is built on the Chromium engine, Ecosia aims to provide an alternative focused on sustainability, using advertising revenue to fund tree-planting initiatives. Additionally, Ecosia is working with the French company Qwant through their joint venture, European Search Perspective (EUSP), to develop a European search index to reduce reliance on major US tech monopolies.
