ECOWAS Bank Provides $91.6 million to Bauchi State for 24 Road and Bridge Projects

The ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) and Bauchi State signed a financing agreement at EBID’s headquarters in Lomé, Togo. The deal, signed by EBID President Dr. George Agyekum Donkor and Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, commits US$91.63 million to the Bauchi State Transport Infrastructure Financing Programme.

The loan will fund the construction and rehabilitation of 24 strategic roads and bridges across the northern Nigerian state, improving connectivity between urban and rural areas, reducing transport costs and strengthening agricultural and commercial value chains. The programme is expected to create about 5,000 jobs during construction and 2,000 permanent positions thereafter.

Nigeria’s federal government backs the facility with a sovereign guarantee, making the loan roughly 14% of Bauchi’s 2026 budget and about 22% of its capital‑spending envelope. Governor Mohammed said the funds would be accessed in August 2026, marking a shift toward regional lenders for sub‑national infrastructure financing.
