ECOWAS Celebrates West Africa Cultural Day in Brussels and Launches New Statistical Guidelines

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) marked its 51st anniversary by hosting the third West Africa Cultural Day in Brussels from July 23‑25, 2026. The three‑day event featured music, sports and educational activities, and a high‑level dialogue on deepening regional integration, with participants from the EU, African Union, diplomatic corps and West African diaspora. ECOWAS officials highlighted ongoing challenges such as security threats, climate‑related food insecurity and youth migration.

In parallel, ECOWAS concluded a five‑day meeting of the Directors‑General of National Statistical Institutes in Dakar, Senegal (July 27‑31, 2026). The summit approved new methodological guides for the Industrial Production Index, Business Register, Public Debt Statistics and other key statistical tools, aiming to improve data quality, comparability and timeliness across member states. Commissioners emphasized that harmonised statistics are essential for monitoring community policies, achieving macro‑economic convergence and supporting deeper regional integration.
