ECOWAS Court holds training for journalists in Abuja

The ECOWAS Court of Justice has launched a three-day training program in Abuja for journalists from member states. The initiative aims to improve the accuracy of media coverage regarding the Court’s mandate, jurisprudence, and legal processes.

Representing Court President Justice Ricardo Gonçalves, Vice President Justice Sengu Koroma noted that public understanding of the Court remains limited due to gaps in reporting. He emphasized that journalists must distinguish between party pleadings and actual court findings to avoid bias, sensationalism, and misinformation.

Justice Gonçalves urged media professionals to use their platforms to pressure member states to comply with the Court’s judgments. He stated that while member states are responsible for enforcing decisions, current compliance levels are “below expectation.” The training seeks to create an effective network of journalists to increase the visibility of the Court’s role in promoting the rule of law and safeguarding human rights across the sub-region.
