ECOWAS Parliament calls for better migration reintegration and climate action

The ECOWAS Parliament has issued calls for improved regional responses to migration and climate change during sessions in Accra, Ghana.

Regarding irregular migration, the Parliament adopted a resolution following a mission to Senegal. The resolution advocates for strengthened reintegration mechanisms for repatriated migrants, emphasizing professional training, psychosocial support, and access to financing to combat financial instability and social stigma. It also calls for enhanced protection and legal action against human trafficking victims.

On the issue of climate change, ECOWAS Parliament President Hadja Mémounatou Ibrahima urged member states to better implement and fund regional strategies. She noted that while resources exist, more effort is required to translate commitments into concrete actions to address regional threats such as coastal erosion, flooding, and desertification.
