Monika Silva's death in Ecuador sparks international calls for independent probe

Polish activist Monika Silva Koniuszek, head of the anti‑corruption Fundación La Integridad, was found dead on 8 June 2026 in her home in Montañita, Santa Elena province, Ecuador. Silva had long warned of threats and a possible plot against her after denouncing land‑traffic and corruption cases. Ecuadorian authorities, citing a preliminary suicide hypothesis, opened a criminal investigation, while the interior minister awaits autopsy results.

The European Union delegation in Ecuador and the Polish embassy have both demanded a rapid, independent and transparent investigation, emphasizing protection for human‑rights defenders. Local residents have held vigils and protests calling for justice. Silva leaves behind two young daughters, whose care is now being arranged by friends.
